Home Security in Austin

Is your home security something you have taken the time to consider? If not, then you should take a moment now to do so. While impenetrable home security is realistically impossible, there are some simple steps that you can take that will make your home security too difficult to bypass to be worth the effort for most intruders.

The simple first step to improving your home security is a tour of your premises. Take note of each entry point. To a thief, ease of entry is usually not as important as whether the entry point is obscured from the view of neighbors - better to spend a little extra effort and time getting in than to draw unwanted attention. Every house is different so don't just assume that a ground floor door or window is going to be the easiest point of entry; that may be true for some homes, but it could also be a side door or a second floor balcony.

Exterior doors and windows are the next things you should check. You should make sure that doors are made of solid wood or metal, their hinges are all in working order, and that they close properly. All exterior doors should have bolt-style locks that are functioning. Windows and sliding doors should all lock securely, and you shouldn't be able to lift them out of their tracks. Consider placing a metal or wooden rod in the tracks to prevent a person on the outside from being able to open them.

You should turn your attention next to your property's landscaping - an area often overlooked in its roll in home security. Trees, while great for helping cooling costs with their shade, should be trimmed high enough that they don't obstruct the view of key entry points into your home. Shrubs also should be well trimmed or even replaced with decorative thorn bushes or even trees. You don't want to unintentionally provide cover from a neighbor's view for a thief trying to break into your home. Tools and gardening equipment can be stolen, but they can also be used to aid a thief in gaining entry to your house; always be sure that they are locked up in a garage or shed, and not left lying out in your yard.

Finally, get to know your neighbors. If you and your neighbors are acquainted then it will be easier for any of you to spot someone who is out of place. In such circumstances, your neighbors will be far more likely to call the police if they spot suspicious activity around your home. A monitored alarm system can also provide a pair of "eyes" on your home 24 hours a day, and if it saves you from even one burglary it will have paid for itself.

How much is your piece of mind worth to you? Your home security, with a little bit of planning and a little bit of maintenance, can become something that will deter thieves from targeting your home. It will be well worth the effort if you are spared from the hassle, cost, and trauma of a break-in.
